A PLACE
Why do hundreds of bicyclists converge Labor Day weekend on a small town in the Estancia Valley New Mexico? Why did Lance Armstrong, A seven-Time Tour De France Winner, come to the same town to his first American Junior Record at the age of 18?
A Time, A Place & A Race: The Record Challenge Time Trial answers these questions through series of short vignettes and commentary within the world of a grassroots bicycling race in Moriarty, NM. The small town's claim to fame is its 40 kilometer time-trial course, widely known as the fastest in the United States, claiming on average 80-90% of American Records at the 20 & 40k distances. An event which 1987 Worlds' Silver Medalist Jane Gagne calls "a celebration of life."
The program features Gagne (Albq. NM), also a Three-time 40K American Record Holder at Moriarty, and a host of others: Nine-time Masters National Champion Julie Kaplin (San Diego CycloVets), who holds the Women's 45-year-old record and two tandem records, is back in 2003 to nab the American Women's 50 record. Nine-time Junior National Champion Chris Stockberger (Ft. Collins, CO), an up and coming rider in the likeness of a Lance Armstrong, searches for his first American Record.
Reaching a broad audience, A Time, A Place & A Race is a inspirational piece that appeals across both gender and age gaps in a "race against the clock" on a "Field of Dreams" course were athletes, elite to beginner, find common ground.
Master riders aging up to 90-years-old, including Herman Ponder, 75 (Sierra Vista, AZ) and Gordon "Gordy" Shields, 85, (San Diego CycloVets) who both have their dreams realized by setting age-graded records again and Record Challenge Pioneer Jack Pardee (Albq., NM) who ventures into unknown territory with a 90 plus record! And American Record Holder John Frey (Albq, NM), who's American Record of 47:35 set in 1990, is still the mark to beat.
